I'm still busy compiling the information for this month, so the player numbers and total hours haven't been properly calibrated, but here is an interesting little factoid:

Well over 4400 of you (I'm dubious about that number, but that's aliases, and the GUID count is far lower), have spent a little over 11 years collectively playing Call Of Duty 4, as recorded by the stats thingy. (I'm still finalizing the numbers and will post the site info shortly with the final totals.

It works out to about 22 hours and 20 minutes for each person, although making an assumption about the 80/20 rule, which means that 20% of you playing out there tally for about 80% of that time.

I'll have body count complete by tomorrow, so that will take the aliases out, and will definitely make the time spent much higher per real person.

Hi all,

We are currently working on a project for a small billing change on our DSL Complete range.

We'd like to hear what your thoughts are at this stage and gather your recommendations/suggestions we can add to the project.

With the massive interest in our DSL Complete packages, and the requests and upgrades and downgrades thereof, we've decided to update the billing slightly.

If you require your DSL Complete package to be upgraded mid-month, the billing will change to reflect the new package. For example, let's assume that you are on a Complete 2 and you'd like to upgrade to
Complete 7. The billing will be adjusted mid-month to reflect a pro-rata billing rate for the Complete 7.

As mentioned, we're still formalising the exact specifications for the project. As it stands, we propose making the following changes should you wish to upgrade mid-month:

Package Upgrades

You want to upgrade from Complete 4 to Complete 7 on the 7th of August. We will process the upgrade on our system and only bill you for the Complete 7 from the next month. In other words, you'll only be paying for a Complete 4 for the rest of August whilst you are using the benefits of the Complete 7.

Data Activation

If you require your ADSL Line to be transferred to Web Africa, we'll activate your data portion of the DSL Complete package while the transfer takes place. You will receive your first invoice once the line has been activated.

I'm getting a little gatvol of the okes calling me that, as the new term being invented, "mingers" and minging with their inventions on Build. I'm not sure if the Falco prop protection is working correctly or is just plain minging itself. So to prevent a whole lot of minging all around, I'm going to start experimenting with alternative prop protection mods. Success will be determined by the least amount of mingers and the minging about the mingers.

Then again, what is a a "minge"? I know the English definition of the word, but how did that come to South Africa to start describing angrifying GMod players and their actions?

There have been many threads about the joy (or not) of being able purchase, download and play games from Steam http://store.steampowered.com , but I was wondering for those who have had issues in the past, to maybe look at other alternatives to Steam, depending on what type of gamer you are.

Remember that, above all else, there are alternatives that you could try. Some of them have strengths and weaknesses that may or may not work to your advantage. I'll go into two alternatives that I use, although there are more, and will warrant further investigation, if you're serious about where you're going to be spending your money for an online game purchase

Impulse Driven http://www.impulsedriven.com/

This crowd works in much the same way as Steam does. Created by Stardock Software (of the Galactic Civilization and Sins of a Solar Empire fame) to download their software initially, they did the same thing as Valve Software, and created their own full digital games service, which now has a host of games being offered by various publishers and developers.

One of their strongest claims to fame is that, barring any extra DRM provided by third-party publishers, the games will always be available from the Impulse client, regardless of internet connectivity. Unlike Steam, where if it cannot make a connection to the interwebz, the Steam client and associated games is usually rendered unusable (unless you chose the "Go Offline" option before, and then, only if you have played the game recently).

The Impulse client will try and connect to the internet to check for updates, but won't get its proverbial knickers in a knot if it can't, and the games will still be available to play in either single-player or LAN mode.

Another cool thing I like about the interface is that it is able to display pricing in multiple currencies (defaults to ZAR in our case), so you have a better idea what you're in for.

Two things which do cause a mild hiccup with Impulse is firstly, publisher exclusives. Certain titles will not appear on Impulse, but then again, certain titles wont on Steam or another service either, due to whatever publishing house had negotiated with whichever digital distributor. Regional availability also factors here. (As I'm looking at the main screen, there is a 50% discount on Mass Effect 2, but not available in our region :( )This first issue is more of a fact-of-life than an actual issue, but I'm bringing it up in any case bringing it up anyways. The other minor hiccup is the lack of a IM system of some sort and social interaction system, although that being said, there are plenty of alternatives such as Xfire and Gamespy Comrade, to name two, that are already well developed that can fill this function nicely anyways.

Good old Games http://www.gog.com/en/frontpage/

Good old Games, or gog.com is exactly that: old, out of normal distribution games that, if you're an older gamer like me, would like to play again. The games are cheap, patched, and completely DRM-free, and you can download them again and again, no digital distro screen to manage them (other than a download manager, and THAT's even optional if you don't want to use it.)

The collection on offer is growing rapidly since the service went live; downloads are contained in a simple single executable file; and as with most older games of the period I played in are all DOS-windowed thingies, already pre-tuned; or otherwise set up to work correctly under current operating systems.

Conclusion

I know its a mouthful compared to what I normally post, but I thought a little enlightenment might be useful. Who knows, maybe we can get local mirrors of these two services going, so that your next online gaming purchase may be even cheaper, or at least, comfortably Freezoned...
