Default Does WA have a publicly accessible SNTP server?

    Hi all,

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

I've historically used the SAIX SNTP server to sync the machines on my home network - it's best to use the SNTP server logically closest to you, plus we know how reliable time.windows.com is (not!). Was just wondering - is there a publicly accessible SNTP server on the WA network that I can use instead? I'd obviously get slightly better results...

(I do consider it bad form to use a stratum-1 server to sync a mere home network, so a stratum-2 server, if it exists, would do fine.)

    Hi Kelerei

The best is to use pool.ntp.org as this will automatically choose close-by ntp server.

Apologies for digging up an old thread...

Is pool.ntp.org still to be used for SNTP on the WA network?
I get a DNS error when trying to resolve that name.

Also my router only accepts an IP address for the time server.
Is there a time server in the WA network (with a reasonable static IP) that I can use to sync time from for my network?

    Thanks, will do.
Is that not one of the SAIX servers?

pool.ntp.org should still work, you can also use za.pool.ntp.org

Another alternative or backup you can use is: ntp.time.org.za

    Thanks
Both pool.ntp.org and za.pool.ntp.org resolve successfully now; must have been a temporary problem on the DNS somewhere.

ntp.wa.co.za is also available, but not officially supported.

    Thanks; good to know.

I like the idea of a DNS round robin to spread the load.
Been using za.pool.ntp.org without problems for the last few days for my network.
Seems like it is only the SAIX time servers who are part of the za "pool".

ntp.wa.co.za is much "closer" than the SAIX servers though if you are a WA client.
Will be nice if it could join the pool...
